Here’s an updated list of pieces where I am looking for expert input.

Please note that February refers to when the article will appear. Deadlines for input after the title!

Financial Times – executive appointments

28 January

How employers relate to potential job candidates

- Including web sites but also how they use social media, mobile, and other tools. Also how to handle the influx of applications social media creates.

Suggested sources: psychologists, recruiters, recruitment agencies, social media experts, candidates. International.

Infosecurity Magazine

31 January

Securing the Olympics

- In late 2009, I looked at the issue of < href=”http://www.infosecurity-magazine.com/view/5372/securing-the-2012-olympics/” target=”_new”>Olympic security</a>. What has happened since, in both the threat landscape, and in preparedness and security measures? The main focus is on cybersecurity threat and response but we will also look at areas where physical and IT security overlap.

Suggested sources: CIOs with experience of similar events, chief technologists at security vendors, consultants, and academics or not-for-profit industry bodies. International.

Tech Target/Search Data Management

3 February

2 articles:

How successful organisations are selecting and blending analytics technologies

How the analysis of unstructured data can be optimally managed

Suggested sources: ideally, these articles will not directly feature vendors, but we can quote analysts, consultants, CIOs or IT managers and other experts. EU wide.

“We’re launching a new magazine on Monday.”

“What’s it called?”

“It’s called The Kernel”

“Is that an army thing then?”

“Err no”

“But The Colonel?”

“No, Kernel as in seed or nut. Not Colonel as in army.”

“I see. So what’s it about then?”

This is — more or less — how the conversation went back at the DW Pubs drinks event on Wednesday (for which I largely hold Daryl Willcox, and his largess behind the bar, responsible. Most people there had been drinking since noon.)

So what IS The Kernel?

The short answer is that it is an online technology magazine. The long answer is explained more fully here by founder and editor-in-chief Milo Yiannopoulos. The idea behind The Kernel is to do something a little different. It will publish commentary and opinion; long-form reports, investigations and interviews; and even gossip. It will not be publishing news.

The Kernel is as much about the back story around the internet, emerging technologies and business models as it is about the latest v1.x release. The magazine will be skewed towards the start up and VC communities (an area that deserves more coverage) but we will cast the net wider. But it will also be about the people who are driving the technology scene across Europe, and beyond. And we hope it will showcase good writing too.

As managing editor for launch, much of the last month has been taken up working behind the scenes on this project: creating editorial workflows, commissioning and editing copy, updating style guides, and planning for the first, virtual edition. Milo has commissioned some excellent design work, and The Kernel will be quite different to other technology titles in both the way it looks, and reads.

This is, though, a start-up. It is “bootstrapped”: start-up funds have come from ourselves, as the founding team. And the editors will continue to work on other projects and accept outside commissions. (One of the reasons there are two editors is so we can both continue with our other writing commitments, although sometimes that is at the expense of sleep).

The Kernel will go live on Monday, 19th December. In the meantime, you can follow us on twitter (@KernelMag) or via Facebook.

And if you want to be involved, as a writer, film maker, photographer, columnist, advertiser or sponsor please drop me and email, or call.

PS: The Kernel – the genesis of an idea. And maybe something to do with operating systems.

Usually, I avoid posting commercial work here but we are rather pleased with this piece, which was commissioned by CAST, a software vendor.

The interview is with Hans Wagner, CIO of the European Medicines Agency.

The client is using this as part of a bank of case studies they are loading on to YouTube.

Credit to Lee Durant (@leedurant) for the camerawork and Paul Maher (@pmaher) from CAST’s PR agency, for working behind the scenes to smooth the process.

The concept behind the commission was to create a piece of work that, whilst to the vendor’s brief, would stand its ground editorially, and tell Mr Wagner’s story.

Equally, we can produce similar work for editorial clients, with or without the journalist on camera. Do drop me an email if that is of interest.

Here are a couple of features where I’m currently actively looking for input:

CNBC – the mobile capacity crunch – deadline for input 12 11 11
How real is speculation that mobile networks are running out of (data) capacity, and what can or should be done?
* especially of interest: business managers who can talk about problems their organisation or staff have experienced with mobile working

Financial Times (Connected Business) – Budgeting for IT- deadline for input 15 11 11
Corporate IT departments are being asked to do more with less. What strategies can they employ to make the most of their IT budgets and who should set spending priorities?
• especially of interest: CFOs and CIOs on how they manage the process. A vendor would have to have a very compelling viewpoint to be included.
NB: We are also looking for podcast interviewees on this subject.

These are the features where I am currently looking for input. Please note that the deadline for all submissions of ideas (not necessarily for actual interviews) is October 15, unless otherwise stated. Please email, rather than call, in the first instance.

Features:

FT report on green business
I am looking for some examples of how businesses have used IT to develop greener products. I am looking to speak to manufacturers, plus perhaps one or two consultants. The focus is on Cad/Cam and PLM.

FT report on cybersecurity
I am looking for businesses using cloud computing, as well as independent experts, to talk about the security challenges.

CNCB feature: the paperless office
Why hasn’t the paperless office taken off? For a CEO level piece I am looking to speak to academics, consultants, analysts and one or two vendors on the topic. It would be good to speak to a couple of companies or public sector bodies that have moved to a paperless system. We might also look at tablets. Readership is worldwide so please, no UK only examples.

Tech Target – note deadline for ideas EOP 18 10 11
For an upcoming eBook, I am covering analytics and BI in the cloud. End user examples, and analyst comment welcome. Strictly no vendor comment, sorry.

For a separate piece I am looking at “Rethinking and revamping database strategies to enable business agility”. Vendors can be mentioned here but user comment, as ever, is preferred.

Due to the ever-higher volume of email we’re receiving, and our service provider’s move to a new mail platform, we are going to upgrade our email systems.

However, no migration promises to work 100 per cent first time, and I have been warned that mail on the hosted servers – roughly from 24-08-11 to 05-09-11 when the migration will be done — may not carry over.

So firstly bear with us if we don’t reply to email instantly; and if you have sent something important since 24-08, you might want to resend to be sure.

thanks
Stephen Pritchard

Thanks again for your patience
