News that Nortel has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection (see Bloomberg for the story) might not surprise industry watchers.
But there will be many telecoms and IT managers who will miss the company, if indeed it stops manufacturing office phone systems. Nortel was once the vendor of choice for small and mid-sized companies, not least because of the reseller arrangements it had with companies such as BT.
Times change, however. If you are in the market to replace an aging Nortel PBX — as indeed we are in this office — voice over IP looks to be the way to go. And when it comes to VoIP, there are just so many other options out there.
